Explore Te Ara, the online encyclopedia Shift designed for the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
Te Ara means pathways. It is the name of New Zealand’s online encyclopedia – a vast collection of stories that will one day cover every aspect of our history, geography, culture and environment.
To help the Ministry for Culture and Heritage manage all this information, we provided robust design templates and trained their in-house production team.
The e-government compliant site uses carefully planned navigation aids to provide many pathways to information for all New Zealanders, especially kids.
Shift’s mission was to excite, entertain and engage, presenting information in various ways for different needs and learning styles. Our designers couldn’t believe their luck. Design plays an educational as well as aesthetic role on the site, with colour and layout highlighting Te Ara’s many themes.
You can get the full authored text or grab a short summary; unravel a story through images, maps, video and sound clips.
An encyclopedia is never finished. We look forward to seeing Te Ara grow and evolve.
