Prior to working at Shift, Ryan was headhunted by The Agent C to work as the Tactical Manager of Smirnoff's award-winning Nikolai Organisation experiential campaign. After The N.O. had wrapped up, Ryan stepped into a role at Shift as a "generalist" - a role that quickly evolved to specialise in digital strategy.

Ryan originally studied to be a Christian minister, but went wildly off the rails and moved into anarchist political philosophy. In 2005, he hosted New Zealand's first independent live election coverage on Triangle TV and was elected to edit Auckland University magazine Craccum for 2006.
